Delegates at IFUT’s recent Annual Delegate Conference heard details of the outcome of the election for the position of Incoming President of the federation.
Following a highly engaged and positive election campaign, Edward Lahiff (UCC) was elected to the role. Rory McGann of Mary Immaculate College also contested the election, with both candidates attracting strong support from members across the federation.
Announcing the result, IFUT General Secretary Frank Jones welcomed the significant turnout in the election and paid tribute to both candidates for the manner in which the campaign was conducted.
Frank noted that the election reflected the strong democratic traditions of IFUT and the high level of engagement among members throughout the higher education sector.
“This election saw an excellent turnout from members across the federation, and I want to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the democratic process. I also want to commend both candidates for conducting thoughtful, energetic and respectful campaigns which reflected extremely well on IFUT and our membership.”
Under IFUT’s leadership structure, Edward will now serve for one year as Incoming President before assuming the office of President for a two-year term. Following completion of that term, he will serve for a further year as Outgoing President, helping to ensure continuity and stability within the leadership of the federation.
Delegates were also reminded that the current President, Michael Hinds, remains in office, having completed the first year of his two-year presidential term.
Congratulating Edward on his election, Frank Jones said he looked forward to working closely with him in the years ahead.
“On behalf of IFUT, I warmly congratulate Edward on his election, and I look forward to working closely with him in the years ahead as we continue to advocate strongly for members and for the future of higher education in Ireland.”
Frank also acknowledged the strength of both candidates and the broad support they received across the union.
“IFUT was very fortunate to have two candidates of the calibre of Rory and Edward. Both candidates demonstrated an ability to secure support from well beyond their own sections, which is a strong reflection of their reputations, their commitment to the federation, and their capacity to undertake this important role.”
