The Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) hosted a well-attended webinar as part of Better in a Trade Union Week, focusing on claiming and planning a Contract of Indefinite Duration (CID) in the higher education sector.
The session brought together staff from across the sector working in academic, research, and academic-related grades, reflecting the high level of interest in securing more stable and predictable employment.
During the webinar, IFUT officials outlined the legal and collective agreement frameworks governing CIDs, providing practical guidance on eligibility, key timelines, and the steps involved in preparing a strong application. The session also highlighted common challenges faced by fixed-term workers and the importance of understanding rights under Irish employment legislation.
A key theme of the webinar was the role of Union representation in advancing job security. Drawing on IFUT’s experience supporting members, the session demonstrated how trade union engagement can strengthen individual claims and improve outcomes for staff across the sector.
