Disability Law in Ireland Launch to Guide by Independent Living Movement Ireland (ILMI)

ILMI Guide Launch

Yesterday (10th of December) the ILMI launched a new Guide that will prove to be a fantastic support tool for Trade Union Representatives and Activists in their workplaces as we assist members with disabilities in their efforts to vindicate their rights.

The Guide to the law in Ireland in relation to Disabilityprovides practical supports in an uncomplicated manner and is written by people with a genuine and real understanding of the challenges faced by workers with disabilities in their employments.

At the launch speaker, Robbie Sinnott, ILMI member, informed those present of the need for all to have an understanding of the minimum standards acceptable with regard to the provision of services so that we can be prepared to argue for same as many of those who are obliged to provide certain standards are unaware of the law.  He cited many examples where service providers have fallen short in their provision and the practical effects that this has on those with disabilities.

The launch was chaired by Shelly Gaynor, Chairperson of the ILMI and long-time member of the ICTU Disability Committee on which IFUT remains active.  IFUT were represented at the launch by Una Crowley, IFUT Executive Committee member, and Frank Jones, Deputy General Secretary.  Hard copies of the Guide will be provided to members of the IFUT Equality Committee at our next meeting.
