The appointment of Batt O’Keefe, TD, as Minister for Education has been welcomed by IFUT General Secretary, Mike Jennings, who said that tackling the chronic underfunding and increasing lack of morale in the third-level sector must be a priority for the new Minister and government.

“We look forward to meeting with Minister O’Keefe and his officials at an early date. Given the seriousness of the funding crisis now facing our universities, a three-tiered approach, involving the Department of Education, senior university management and IFUT should be undertaken, to formulate a new approach to defending and funding third level education.

“The aim must be to maintain and develop the educational and academic standards that produced the graduates who helped create the Celtic Tiger – in the interests of our economy and society,” Mike Jennings said.
