Labour Court rules NUIG must deal with internal promotion case

The Labour Court has ruled that negotiations should occur between NUI Galway and a staff member and her trade union on the issue of promotion procedures, in a case taken by the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT), Recommendation no. LCR21233.

The case relates to a claim for breach of college procedures relating to promotions to senior lecturer.

IFUT Deputy General Secretary, Joan Donegan, said that “the Labour Court ruling places still further pressure on the college authorities in NUIG, by requiring that the matter be ‘processed... through the appropriate internal procedures of the university.’

“These procedures have proved clearly inadequate and must be changed and made effective urgently, particularly in view of the report due shortly by an independent review committee under the Chairpersonship of Maire Geoghegan-Quinn,“ Joan Donegan said.
